BIG EARTH LISTENING

Big Earth Listening was an installation created by SensiLab for the 2018-19 MPavilion season. The pavilion for the year was designed by architect Carme Pinós with an aspiration to create ‘a place to experience with all the senses; to establish a sophisticated relationship with nature.’ Taking this as the design brief, we developed an installation that allowed anyone anywhere to experience the acoustic space below MPavilion.

The installation consisted of:

  • 4 hydrophones (sensitive to pressure changes) buried around the pavilion. These live feeds were wired into a digital audio mixer.
  • Server that synced up the live feeds and streamed all 4 channels with minimal latency
  • An accurate (but abstract) 3D representation of the pavilion
  • The 4 audio streams were then placed in matching real world and virtual locations to esnure the world was spatially correct

The installation (which still has recorded tours!) could then be experienced online, as well as through a specially developed (extra immersive) VR version.
